Otava Group ranks third among graphic communications publishers in Finland. The Group’s principal business areas are Books, Trade, Magazines, and New business functions. The company was established in 1890 with the founding of Otava Publishing Company, which commenced printing operations in 1908 and magazine publishing in 1916 (Suomen Kuvalehti). Otava was a founding member of Otavamedia Ltd (1934, before known as United Magazines Ltd) and The Great Finnish Book Club Ltd (1969). The Book Club was merged with Otavamedia Ltd in 2010. The Group expanded into online business with the acquisition of NettiX Oy and Ampparit Oy. Otava Ltd purchased Suomalainen Kirjakauppa Ltd in 2011. In 2014, Otava Publishing Company acquired the majority share of Kustannusosakeyhtiö Moreeni and in 2015 the stock of F-Kustannus Oy. In 2015, Otavamedia Customer Communications, DeCo Media Ltd and MCI Press LTD joined forces and the new company was named Otavamedia OMA Ltd. In addition Otavamedia Ltd acquired in 2015 the book clubs of Bonnier Books Finland and they were merged with the Great  Finnish Book Club. In October 2015 Otavamedia Ltd acquired Alma 360 Ltd from Alma Media. Otava New Businesses Ltd was demerged from Otavamedia Oy in May 2016. The new company owns NettiX Oy and Ampparit Oy. In October 2016 Otava Publishing Company acquired the stock of Kustannusosakeyhtiö Nemo.

The Group’s parent company is Otava Ltd. The Group is a private, independent, impartial, and financially sound media corporation.
